Myth: we failed so spectacularly at #Oca this go-around, that we lost 89% of the crop, reducing me nearly to tears and a broken heart on the verge of giving up on them.
Fact: it was 90% of the crop.
.
These are the surviving remnants that successfully and gloriously tuberized to our sheer relief. We took a calculated risk, and the risk cost us big time, so much so that earlier this year I was too angry to think about trying again. Then I couldn't shake this nagging thought, probably on old adage I'd heard over the years but nonetheless painfully real and relevant now: if we don't fail even at some of our most diligently, carefully calculated plans, we're probably not taking enough risks. And if we're not taking enough risks, we are by definition playing it too safe. There's little or nothing wrong with safe, mind you, but

I think I can say this out loud not so much because 10% of the oca survived, but because 10% surviving oca plus 90% dead oca equals 100% oca data--invaluable, precious data to analyze and reflect on what DIDN'T work which is every bit as crucial and necessary alongside what DID work (especially in research and development). We won't be giving up figuring out this guy anytime soon, because we can only get better from this point 😂😂 (not to mention r&d is at the core of why/how we farm).
